AT A GLANCE
MIRA (Managing Information with Rural America)

Launched: 1997

Funding Amount:
$16.5 million

Goal Area:
To help people in rural communities determine how technology can be used to address the growing concerns of rural populations on such matters as economic development, education, health, and leadership.

Managing Information with Rural America (MIRA) is a grantmaking initiative of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Food Systems/Rural Development program area. It seeks to draw upon the reservoirs of strength, tenacity, and civic commitment in rural communities and to help rural people use technology (electronic communications and information systems) as a tool to meet current and future challenges. People first, with technology serving communities second.

MIRA

  • Focuses on people in rural communities and their participation in building their own community development capacity.
  • Values the resources and skills which people in rural communities have in the application of technology.
  • Connects individuals, communities, and organizations, and help them work together in new and different ways.
  • Promotes sharing of information and ideas.
  • Values diverse people, perspectives, networks, and experiences.
  • Provides time to reflect on approaches to complex issues.
  • Encourages development of shared visions and collaborative strategies to influence systems change.
