The CSOs of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Southeastern Ohio were funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission in a partnership with Kellogg. The Appalachian Center for Economic Networks (ACEnet) is a community economic development organization located in rural southeastern Ohio. The mission of ACEnet is to build the capacity of local communities to network, innovate, and work together to create a strong, sustainable regional economy that has opportunities for all. As a MIRA CSO, ACEnet's primary goal was to increase area residents' and organizations' media literacy. ACEnet accomplished this goal by hosting a conference for residents and organizations to attend. Thirty participants from a variety of ages, ranging from middle school students to senior citizens and from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, attended in the conference. The participants gained an increased awareness about media literacy and as a result were able to create a brand new web site or improve an existing one. During the intensive production aspect of the conference, new and enhanced relationships were developed between the nonprofit organizations of the region. In addition to the conference, ACEnet also great expanded its own web page and published its first Annual Report. The report was distributed to over 3,000 supporters. Furthermore, ACEnet is continuing a relationship with one of the Ohio CCTs, the Miller Business Team, also known as SPICE. ACEnet is helping them develop a business incubator and a business assistance program. |
