At the beginning of their involvement with MIRA, the Bovill team members focused their efforts around the lack of communication within their community. Bovill is a small community with no local newspaper, radio stations, or other media outlets. The team wanted to use technology to help remedy this problem. The team purchased a community phone voice mail system to put into the local elementary school. This system will allow quicker and easier communication between teachers, city officials and other groups. The new system has 32 mailboxes available for use of different community entities. The implementation of the system has been put on hold pending the installation and programming of the system by the company the team purchased the system from. The team also made internet access available to the city offices, the local library, and the local school. The internet access allows these groups to better communicate and has led to more efficient planning. In addition to the internet hook-up, the team also provided the city offices with a computer (to replace an outdated model), a printer, and a copier. The addition internet access to the local library also included the installation of the phone lines and related computer programs need for the internet connection. The library has now become one of the busiest locations in the town. Also, due to the training received at the MIRA workshops and conferences, the city was able to expand their existing fire district through cooperation and communication between interested groups. The MIRA training helped to change the feeling involved in the transformation of the volunteer fire department from a city funded entity to an independent fire district that worked with the community. MIRA funds were then used to renovate and repair the towns emergency fire siren, which had not been in working condition for several years. Before the repairs made with MIRA funds, the volunteer fire department was forced to communicate via a phone tree in the event of an emergency. The newly renovated siren serves, not only to announce emergencies, but as a town timing system. The team used the remainder of their MIRA funds to hold a community celebration for the entities and volunteers involved in the MIRA projects. The purpose of the celebration was to recognize to accomplishments of the MIRA projects and encourage further involvement of citizens in community activities. |
