The Mother-Daughter Program: encouraging young women.

The Mother Daughter program works to encourage young women, especially Hispanic students in grades 8-12, to continue their high school and college educations.

With MIRA funding, the Program staff created a new technology training component, purchased computers, software and video equipment, and held a mother-daughter "lock-in" focusing on technology.

Internally, the MIRA project has strengthened the Mother-Daughter program in a number of areas. The MIRA funding enabled the program to produce a video story for publicity and fundraising purposes, which has helped them to locate and secure sustained funding for the program.

The technology training component has had a domino effect on the community. Exposing program members to computers and the internet has increased their confidence and capacity in using technology. This in turn has increased the number of opportunities for program members in educational, social, civic and economic development. As a result, the educational expectations for young Hispanic women are beginning to change.
