Floyd County, Virginia has a population of 13,000 and is geographically isolated by the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Looking for a way to connect and celebrate their community, the Floyd team members pursued three goals for their MIRA project. The first and most successful was the significant upgrading and expansion of the county website. The Floyd Information Network homesite answers just about any question a user might have. Due to the intricate network of mountain ridge and valley roads, many of them still rustic dirt and gravel surface, an interactive road map provides detailed directions. Also the Health Care page, maintained by a local doctor, addresses common health issues, has proven one of the most popular sections of the site.

Additionally, the team installed interactive kiosks in two business locations in the county. These kiosks give visitors access descriptive and contact information for local hotels, restaurants and other traveler resourses.

Finally, the MIRA team, along with the high school tech club and the local 4-H, is beginning a project to tape the oral history of long-time residents.
