The Greenfield team's focus was community communication. The team hired a local consultant to do a needs assessment for telecommunications service in the community, so they would be more informed as they implemented their project.
Once armed with the information, the team decided to do research and create a business plan for an e-commerce site. The site, Prairie Harvest, was then created and run by the Henry A. Wallace Country Life Center. Items offered for sale on the site include Iowa natural food products and Iowa artwork. The team's core group also gave presentations to local civic and educational groups. These presentations were designed to let the public know the importance of telecommunications in today's world and specifically in Greenfield. Due to this public education campaign, a large number of people in Greenfield were touched by the project in various ways. Finally, the team launched a postcard campaign in the community to send to the local phone service provider stating the community's desires for improved service. The postcards gained the phone company's attention and, after discussions with community leaders, a verbal commitment by the phone company to attempt to provide updates in the system for internet access and telecommunications use was obtained. |
