The CSOs of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Southeastern Ohio were funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission in a partnership with Kellogg. Rural Action is a membership-based organization working for the development of sustainable communities in Appalachia Ohio. Rural Action's mission is to promote economic, social, and environmental justice in Appalachian Ohio. The organization trains, organizes, networks and supports citizens in the revitalization of their communities. Rural Action currently serves as a community development incubator for projects in Appalachian Ohio counties. As a MIRA CSO, Rural Action had two main goals. The organization wanted to strengthen its capacity to manage information and increase regional communication. In order to achieve the first goal, Rural Action purchased a variety of equipment intended to enhance their ability to interpret their work, begin a Community -Development Tool Box publishing program and attract student interns.
Since the purchase of the new equipment, they have completed the first aspect of their Community Development Tool Box, "Community Based Murals." Also, in order to reach their first goal, Rural Action hired a communications coordinator. In order to reach their second goal, they participated in quarterly MIRA meetings with the other members of the Ohio MIRAcle team. Rural Action was also involved with the hosting of the Media Literacy Conference. Rural Action staffed a "technology workstation" and helped with registration and administration of the conference events. The conference, entitled "Building Community Meaning in the Digital Age," provided attendees with the communication tools for organizing their organizations and regions. |
